She earned her doctorate as a widowed parent of four boys. Education was of the utmost importance to Lois.  She instilled this in her four sons and all of them went on to receive their respective college degrees.

During her long, respected career at Ball State University she considered community health and maternal-child health her specialties.  During her career at Ball State, she did valuable work in curriculum development.  She also consulted at Florida Atlantic University while they worked toward accreditation.  She worked and loved her position at Ball State until her retirement in 1995.

After retirement Lois moved to Deerfield Beach, Florida where she enjoyed her retirement surrounded by friends and her busy life in the Florida sun.  She was active in the community and volunteered her time to various organizations, but she considered most valuable her time volunteering at Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton, Florida.  She provided loving care to countless individuals suffering from terminal illnesses.
