MUNCIE- James Franklin Barnell, 95, passed on May 19, 2018. Born in Muncie on December 4, 1922, he was the son of Myrtle and Harry Barnell.

A 1941 graduate of Muncie Central, he spent his career working in the glass industry with Kimble Glass, Owens-Illinois, and Indiana Glass. Along the way he earned his Professional Engineering Certification. On June 23, 1946 he married Mary Holdcraft and lived their next 70 years together in Muncie, where they raised their three sons.

Jim served his country during World War II after enlisting in the US Navy. He was a registered Boy Scout for over 40 years, was recognized with their distinguished Silver Beaver Award, and saw his three sons and 2 grandsons earn the Eagle rank.

He enjoyed his family, especially at the cottage on Dewart Lake, a destination for 58 years. Jim was an avid BSU basketball fan and season ticket holder for 50 years. In his workshop over the years, he produced countless wooden items to support High Street United Methodist Church’s annual bazaars. He and wife Mary especially enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling with their dance friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and grandson Wesley.

Memories of Jim will be cherished by his sons Mel (Ann), Modoc, IN; Thom (Joan), Fisherville, KY; and Jeff (Michele), Santa Rosa, CA; grandchildren Aaron (Carla), Christa (Todd Bunner); Jared (Christine), Emily (Ryan Gardner), Thomas (Rachel), Robert, Katherine, and Evan; and great-grandchildren Avery, Clara, Aurelia, Aidric, Charlotte, Teak, and Henry.

Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at High Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Charlotte Overmyer officiating. Military Rites will follow by The United States Navy and the Veterans of Delaware County.

Friends may call before the service from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to High Street United Methodist Church, 219 S. High Street, Muncie, IN 47305.
