YORKTOWN- James “Jim” L. Witty, 87, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born on August 29, 1930 in McMinnville, TN, the son of Willie B. and Ollie Lee (Summers) Witty.

Jim graduated from Center High School in Cannon County, Tennessee. He moved to Muncie in 1949 to start a new job at Delco Battery General Motors Division. Within two years, he received a draft notice from the United States Army. He was assigned to the Intelligence and Recon (INR) platoon, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. The night of November 15, 1952 the platoon was attacked and Jim was shot and subsequently awarded the Purple Heart. His total time in the hospital was over one and half years. On June 30, 1954 he was discharged from the Army and drove himself home to Muncie, Indiana.

After returning home he met and married the love his life, Marylou Hofherr on November 2, 1957 at Yorktown Christian Church. He worked forty-four years at Delco Battery and raised three children. He was an active long time member at Westside Church of Christ serving as Deacon and Treasurer. Jim coached girls softball for several years. He loved watching baseball, girls softball, gardening, and mowing his yard. Jim always kept a second chair under the shade tree for anyone who wanted to stop by.

Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Marylou (Hofherr) Witty; three children, Alan Witty, Michael Witty (wife, Lynn), and Teresa Terrell (husband, Joe); six grandchildren, Alison and Andrew Witty, Grace and Grant Witty, Lauren and Matthew Terrell; sister, Opal Martin; and special caregivers, Ashley Mason and Lanette Ivy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Roy Martin.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 7901 W. Isanogel Rd., in Yorktown. A private family burial will take place in Gardens of Memory, north of Muncie.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, 2017 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Mt Pleasant Chapel or one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
