Muncie – Long time educator, James M. Bogan, 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at The Woodlands in Muncie with his second wife of twenty-one years, Christine Ney by his side.
Jim was born in Kirklin, Indiana on March 31, 1941, the oldest son of Marion P. and Margaret Ann (Ogle) Bogan. He married Karen Gossard in 1962 and had three children; Jay, Tamara and Tonia.
Jim was a graduate of Kirklin High School and went on to attain a BS in mathematics and a MAT in mathematics education from Purdue University.
He began his teaching career at Clinton Prairie High School where he taught for two years and then at Lebanon High School from 1964 until 1995, teaching math and science. He also developed a K-12 Planetarium Curriculum. He was a one year visiting fellow at the Indiana Academy at Ball state University where he authored a physics manual for the science department. Summers where spent attaining further education in science and teaching workshops in physics at various universities across the country. After retiring in 1995, Mr. Bogan continued to teach and tutor part-time for Ivy Tech Community College until his recent illness.
Mr. Bogan was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Retirement Organization, the Indiana Historical Society, the Indiana Genealogy Society and the Purdue Alumni Association.
Besides his love for teaching, Jim loved music, sometimes playing his bass at Lebanon High School musicals and various bluegrass festivals. For many years, he served in various leadership roles in the Boy Scouts. He was an avid reader of history, science, genealogy, and fly-tying books and magazines. Most of all, he loved his time fishing with his grandsons and planting and harvesting his garden each year.
Along with his beloved wife, Mr. Bogan is survived by his children, Jay Bogan, Tammy Bogan Page and Tonia Bogan Key; his grandchildren, Alex, Ben and CJ Key, Zachary Taylor, April Sellers and Tiffany Page; one great-granddaughter, Sierria Sellers; his siblings, Marcia Bogan Wiley, Rita Bogan Brock and Kevin Bogan; Jim’s final words to his family were “Love each other as I have loved you.”
Family and friends are invited to a gathering at Kirklin Christian Church, Kirklin, Indiana on June 9, 2018 from 12:00 until 4:00 p.m. to celebrate Jim’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Boy scouts of America.
