DUNKIRK – John Elmer Smith, Sr., 92, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, April 14, 2017 at Jay County Hospital.

John was born on October 4, 1924 in Muncie, the son of Elmer and Gladys Smith and graduated from Redkey High School in 1942. He enlisted in the US Marines and served honorably in the Pacific from 1942-1945.

After the war, he moved to Montana where he met and married the love of his life, Mary Noreen Lund on March 11, 1947. John worked at Armstrong Cork/ Kerr Glass in Dunkirk as a carpenter and pattern maker until his retirement. He was a member of American Legion, VFW, Masonic Lodge and Plymouth United Church of Christ in Dunkirk.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Smith (wife, Claire) of Portland, Jerry Smith (wife, Pat) of Yorktown and John Smith, Jr. (wife, Sharon) of Dunkirk; four grandchildren, Eric (Samantha), Ryan, Jared (Sarah) and Kristen (Harrison); one great-grandson, Reed; two sisters, Fay Jordan of Danville, IN and Lois Anderson (husband, Duane) of Orlando, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 69 years, Mary Noreen Smith on March 4, 2016; three sisters, Rosalie, Ada and May; one brother, Wilbur; and a grandson, Jeffrey.

There will be a private family service at a later date in Lewistown, Montana.
