John H. Meiser, 78, of Muncie passed away on August 10. His life was marked by faith, integrity, scholarship, adventure, and a deep love for his family and friends.

Born in Reading, Ohio, John attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, and went on to receive his B.S. from Xavier University and Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. His career included positions at the University of Dayton and its research program at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Argonne National Laboratory, De La Salle University in Manila (Fulbright Grant), and Indiana University’s program in Kuala Lumpur, but was largely defined by 46 years as a professor of chemistry at Ball State University, from which he retired in 2015 as Professor Emeritus. He was a dedicated teacher, researcher, and mentor, whose textbooks were adopted worldwide and translated into several languages. He was a Fellow of the Indiana Academy of Sciences (secretary 1980-1983); and member of the Society Applied Spectroscopy (chairman 1984-1985), American Chemical Society, and American Physical Society.

John had a zest for life matched by insatiable curiosity and unparalleled wanderlust. He travelled extensively across six continents, often with his favorite companion Enya, his wife of 50 years. He was an avid aviation enthusiast, earning his pilot’s license and even skydiving at the age of 64. He encouraged his daughters, Tina, Tessa, and Trina, to explore the world and embrace its myriad cultures.

John is best known for his love and support of all who were close to him, and for being a sensitive and just soul. He was a devout Roman Catholic, and demonstrated countless acts of compassion and generosity to those in unfortunate circumstances. He will be remembered as a gracious father, uncle, friend, teacher, mentor, and colleague.

He is survived by his wife Enya (Flores); daughters Maria Cristina (Joseph), Maria Teresa, Maria Katharina; grandchildren Reina, Tristan, and Rowan; brother Robert; and nephew Christopher. He is predeceased by his parents Paul and Mildred (Turck) Meiser.
