Judy D. Burns, 72, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2018 at her residence, after a brief illness.
Judy was born September 17, 1945 in Richmond, the daughter of Merl and Marjorie (Stevens) Mills. She graduated from Richmond High School in 1963, and graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education.
Judy met Michael Burns in August 1972. It was love at first sight and they married on September 30, 1972. From that moment on, they enjoyed life to the fullest, with lots of love and laughter. They loved to travel and made many memories on cruises and other adventures. Although a mild backseat driver, everyone always had a blast when traveling with her.
She was the matriarch of the family always creating love and fun. She taught her kids to love life, play games, laugh often, and use correct grammar. She passed down her quick wit to her children who continued her fun-loving sarcastic legacy. Laughter was never missing from her home.
Judy began her teaching career at Cowan High School as an English teacher. She also coached the girl’s JV basketball team, known as Burnsy’s B-Team Bouncers, and was the Flag Corps Instructor for the Hawkettes. Judy then taught English at Muncie Northside High School before finishing her career at Muncie Central High School, teaching English and Spanish, her real passion. She loved her students, taking them on many trips to Spain and Mexico. She started as a Red Devil, but ended as a true purple Bearcat.
From the time Judy was a child, she was a very happy, loving person who grew up with music and dance. She loved playing games with friends and family. Judy always greeted you with a hello, asked if you were hungry, then everyone gathered at the table to play games. She loved her weekly game dates with Virginia, Thelma, Linda and Sue, and her many exciting trips with the “Yo’s”, Vickie, Nancy and Kelly.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Michael Burns; two children, Kent Thornburgh (Cyndy McAdams), and Sherri Bell (husband, Beau); two step children, Mickra Stickler (husband, Dan) and Shelley Palko; eleven grandchildren Darrell, Kyle, Aubrey, Josh, Abbie, Alex, Michael, and Matt; and three great grandchildren.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Jim Mills and her daughter-in-law Julie Fitzgerald Thornburgh.
