MUNCIE –  Margaret Joan “Jo” Hammond, 91, passed away on Sunday morning, January 28, 2018 at Signature Health Care of Muncie.

Jo was born on July 13, 1926 in Muncie, the daughter of Carson and Lottie Copeland. She grew up in Muncie during the depression and attended Muncie Schools. She met her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Clarence R. “Buster” Hammond at Muncie Central. At age 17, she and Buster were married just before he shipped off to Europe during World War II.

After he returned home, they started a family and raised two daughters, Pam and Kim Hammond who attended Burris Laboratory School. Jo was a homemaker; she later returned to night school and graduated from Muncie Central. She lived in Muncie all her life, except for five years when Buster was transferred from Muncie to St. Marys, Ohio with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. After his death in 1974, she returned to Muncie and worked as a secretary for “Pastor Jack” at the Grace University Lutheran Chapel. Jo was always a Bearcat, and a proud Democrat.

Jo loved good food and socializing, and was an avid viewer of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. She was famous for her homemade dumplings, noodles, gravy, pies and cakes. Her chocolate/mayonnaise and chocolate/cherry cakes were family favorites on birthdays and holidays. She started a family tradition of calling her kids and grandkids on their birthdays and singing the “Happy Birthday to You” song over the phone.

Jo is survived by her daughter, Pam (Hammond) Irwin (husband, Kent) of Muncie; granddaughter, Jennifer (Irwin) Scroggins (husband, Eric) and great-grandsons, Ethan and Finn Scroggins of Indianapolis; grandson, Jason Irwin of Brooklyn, NY, granddaughter, Kaley (Rosenberg) Kelley (husband, Rick) of Columbus, OH; grandson, Michael Rosenberg (wife, Rachael) and great-granddaughter, Lennox Rosenberg of Columbus, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Buster Hammond; one daughter, Kim (Hammond) Rosenberg; eleven brothers and sisters; and long-time companion, Jerry Clark.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Reverend Charlotte Overmyer officiating.  Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie.
