Muncie – Nancy A. (Hoover) Cleary, 92, died May 29, 2018. The child of Frank Lewellyn Hoover and Helen Louzaine Lamson, Mrs. Cleary was born June 8, 1925 in Rensselaer. She was baptized and was a 5th generation member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rensselaer, where her mother served as the first female Elder in the Church. She graduated from Rensselaer High School as salutatorian where she played clarinet in the band. Mrs. Cleary received a bachelor’s degree in English from Purdue University where she also was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Mrs. Cleary subsequently taught English in the South Bend city schools, during which time she met and married Don Cleary, a graduate engineering student at the University of Notre Dame. Following the birth of twin boys, the family moved to Jackson, Michigan where Mrs. Cleary gave birth to a daughter. During the next several years, Mr. Cleary’s engineering career would take the family to different cities and Mrs. Cleary stayed busy as well; raising three children, substitute teaching, delivering Meals on Wheels, and even teaching at a technical college. She later enjoyed traveling and meeting new people. She is lovingly remembered for her patience, the pride she took in her family, and for being a wonderful listener who was genuinely interested in others. Mrs. Cleary always tried to see the good in everyone and constantly reminded her children that “If you cannot say something nice about a person, don’t say anything”.
Mrs. Cleary was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Frank and Jim Hoover; and her husband, Don.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. Patrick A. Cleary (wife, Marilyn) of Yorktown and Dr. Michael J. Cleary (wife, Jane) of Grove City, PA; a daughter, Barbara A. Yoder (husband, Dave) of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Carol (Mrs. Jim Hoover) of Rensselaer.
