MUNCIE – Ray Burgess, 95, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, August 3, 2018 at The Woodlands Nursing Home.

He was born December 15, 1922 in Oakville, the son of Paul and Myrtle A. (Brown) Burgess. Ray spent most of his life in Delaware County, except for a tour of duty in WWII as a Marine Medic stationed in the South Pacific where he received a purple heart.

He worked at Marhoefer Meat Packing Company and the US Postal Service retiring from there in 1985. Ray was a longtime member of the Oakville Brethren Church where he loved to sing with his good friend, Donny Blevins.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, baseball and was an avid Colts fan.

Ray leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Betty J. Burgess of Muncie; one son, James R. “J.R.” Burgess (companion, Tami Stiles) of Muncie; one daughter, Barbara J. Hines (husband, Mike) of Blackford County; two grandsons, Jay R. Burgess of Florida and Jordon H. Burgess of Muncie; five granddaughters, Joy M. Burgess of Florida, Cami Smith of Florida, Morgan Siphers of Muncie, Katie J. Hines of Bloomington, Dr. Kristin Hines of Tennessee; step-granddaughter, Jessica Cline (husband, Todd) of Fishers; several great-grandchildren and he was “Uncle” to many nieces and nephews; two sisters, Mary Crouse and Martha Burgess, both of Muncie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Edna A. Kirby on March 17, 1986; twin daughters, Mary and Marilyn Burgess; one sister, Bethel Craig and one brother, George Burgess.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Pastor Joe Hines officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie with full military honors provided by The United States Navy and the Veterans of Delaware County.

Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2018.
