Retired Judge Steven R. Caldemeyer passed away on Tuesday, October 23 after battling many illnesses. Steve was born February 6, 1942, in Springfield, Missouri.
He graduated from Burris Laboratory School in 1959 and earned a BS in Education from Indiana University in 1963. He went on to receive a Doctor of Jurisprudence from IU in 1967 and a Master’s Degree in history from BSU in 1971. Steve taught history and political science at BSU and was admitted to the Indiana State Bar Association in 1970. He served as Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Delaware County and later became Master Commissioner for Delaware Circuit Court under the Honorable Alva Cox. In 1976 he became Judge of Delaware County Court No. 2 and later served as judge of Delaware Superior Court No. 2 from 1977-1982. In 1983, Steve became Judge of Delaware Circuit Court and served in this role for almost 30 years until he retired in 2002.
Judge Caldemeyer received numerous awards throughout his career. Among these, he was most proud of the Robert J. Kinsey Award for outstanding judicial service and support to the children and youth of Indiana, the Liberty Bell Award for outstanding community service, and the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor an Indiana governor bestows to a person for wisdom and public commitment. Steve dedicated his professional life to serving the needs of youth in Delaware County and beyond, and his greatest accomplishment was the founding of the Youth Opportunity Center, an organization that reflects this commitment.
Steve is survived by his wife, Carole, of 55 years, 3 children: Krysha Voelz (Jim), Cortland Caldemeyer (Lizzie), and Sacha Gan (Russell); ten grandchildren: Caroline, Samuel, Grace, and Elizabeth Voelz; Austin, Sawyer, and Reese Caldemeyer; and Kai, Noah, and Kalea Gan; his brother, Allan Caldemeyer (Bonnie); brother-in-laws Ed Campbell, Tuck Schulhof (Sandy), and Lary Schulhof (Jan); nieces Krysia, Alicia, Jennifer, Courtney and Mandy; and nephews Chris, Kevin, Scott, Matt, Marty, Clark, Casey, Wes, and Steven.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mary Kathryn Caldemeyer; a sister, Susan Campbell; and several aunts and uncles.
