WARREN – Virgil R. Oxley, 95, formerly of Blountsville, passed away on Sunday afternoon, May 7, 2017 at Parkview Huntington Hospital.

He was born August 21, 1921 on the family farm in Blountsville, the son of Alvin H. and Ethel L. (Keesling) Oxley and graduated from Center High School in 1939. Virgil served in the Civil Air Corps / U.S.  Navy Reserve as an Aviation Cadet from 1942- 1945. On November 25, 1945 in Blountsville Methodist Church, he married Naomi Elizabeth Hunt.

Virgil primarily worked as a farmer for 30 years until his retirement in 1967. He also worked at Westinghouse for 6 years, owned the airport at Winchester for 17 years, built houses, sold insurance and worked at Munson Car Sales for several years. Virgil was a member of High Street United Methodist Church where he served as church trustee and head usher, Macre Ne Feirma Club and was a member of the Foresters Club. He was affectionately known as the “peanut brittle man” and he started making peanut brittle with his mom and continued over his lifetime to make, give away and sell it to the Muncie Optimus club as their fundraiser for many years.

He loved to grow flowers, especially daffodils, regal lilies and gladiolas.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Naomi E. Oxley of Warren; two sons, Kevin L. Oxley (wife, Eileen) of Huntington and Kent L. Oxley (wife, Jody) of Glen Ellyn, IL; six grandchildren, Michelle Kathrins (husband, Brad) of Glendale, AZ, Andrea K. Douglass (husband, Charles) of Huntington, Heather Oxley Yates of Surprise, AZ, Aaron Oxley (wife, Rayann) of Surprise, AZ, Sarah Lowry (husband, Justin) of Edwardsville, IL and Matthew Oxley of Madison, WI and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Keith L. Oxley; one daughter, Karen L. Oxley; and one sister, Charline James.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at High Street United Methodist Church, 219 S. High Street, with Reverend Charlotte Overmyer officiating.  Burial will follow in Blountsville Cemetery.

Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017 or at High Street United Methodist Church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

Memorial contributions may be made to High Street United Methodist Church, 219 S. High Street, Muncie, IN  47305.
