She was born in Paoli, Indiana, the 7th of 8 children to William Arthur and Ada (Qualkinbush) Hickman. Verna often talked lovingly of her childhood. She was an excellent student and enjoyed playing on the school basketball and volleyball teams. Most of her free time was spent in the barn learning life lessons from her brothers and father. After Vernon’s death, she married Charles “Charlie” Reason of Gaston and they were married for over 25 years until his death in 2001.

She worked at Borg Warner for 37 years, retiring as a buyer. Verna was an active member of the community serving in several organizations. She was an avid bowler who continued to roll many 300 games well into her 80’s. She also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, working puzzles and cheering on the Pacers. Verna loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a regular attendee at all her grandchildren’s events and was always willing to babysit.
