MUNCIE – Alayne Moore Retherford, 91, passed away on March 21, 2021, at Yorktown Manor.

Alayne was born on April 18, 1929, in Lowell, Massachusetts to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Moore. She was raised in her beloved hometown of Marblehead, Massachusetts. She graduated from Framingham State Teachers College and became a Registered Dietician. She had an internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and worked as a dietician at several hospitals and nursing homes.

Alayne’s world changed when she met a skinny Harvard University student from Indiana, Charles V. Retherford, on a blind date at a Christmas dance in 1947. They were married on June 21, 1952, after Charles graduated from law school proving again that opposites do attract. They honeymooned in Vermont but that was cut short when Charles was summoned into service with the United States Navy. They resided in Norfolk, Virginia until they moved to Muncie, Indiana in 1955 where Charles entered the practice of law and they raised their three children.

Alayne was a world traveler and she and Charles traveled to, among other places, Europe, Russia, New Zealand and Australia. She was a member of Hazelwood Christian Church, Muncie Lawyers Wives, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra Association and other philanthropic organizations.

Alayne is survived by her husband; children, Charles A. Retherford (Pam), Andrew R. Retherford (Deborah) and Rebecca A. Shroyer (Steven); brother, Bob Moore; and grandchildren, Eden Shroyer and Macon Shroyer.

She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Robert Moore; stepmother, Catherine Moore; and sister, Cynthia Goodwin.

There will be a private family burial service and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

The family would like to express its gratitude to the staff at Yorktown Manor for the excellent care provided to Alayne.

The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be directed to the family at www.meeksmortuary.com.
