Duane Hobley, a well-known and loved member of the Muncie and Farmland community, passed away February 15, 2021, at the age of 77, due to complications related to vascular dementia. He was at home surrounded by family who will strive to carry on his legacy of compassion, kindness and helping others.

Duane was born in Winchester, Indiana on July 2, 1943. He graduated from Farmland High School and went on to attend Indiana University, where he earned his undergraduate degree as well as his MBA. Following graduate school, Duane was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, Finance Corps.

Duane took over his father’s insurance and real estate business based in Farmland, Indiana. He enjoyed working in a small community, knowing his neighbors, and helping other small businesses and farms through good times and bad. Duane was proud to run Hobley Agency as a successful business out of Farmland for more than 35 years before it was acquired by First Merchants.

Duane and wife Marge were active members of their community in Muncie, where they lived for over 50 years. They raised 3 children and cared for their niece. They loved their communities at First Presbyterian Church and Riverside Baptist Church, where they developed lifelong friendships that exist to this day.

Duane genuinely loved people and this was apparent in all of his interactions. He truly “never met a stranger.”  He had a warm heart, a good work ethic, and was always curious about those he met. He truly valued his friendships and relationships and was known to reach out and support those who were struggling.

One of Duane’s greatest joys was being a grandfather. He had a special gift and love for rocking a little one to sleep and giving cuddles (and he often insisted on this job). Over the last 10 years, he cherished his trips to be with granddaughters Halie Grace and Jordan, family beach vacations with his twin grandsons and new granddaughter Lilly, and coming out to NYC to celebrate (and help) with granddaughters.

Duane is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Marge, his daughters Melissa Hobley (Paul Yau) and Gwen Chastain (Tyson Chastain), his sisters Brenda Friedman, Lisa Welling, his grandchildren Halie Grace, Jordan, Harrison, Edison, Maddie, Chloe, Lilly, nieces and nephews, Shonna, Shana, Sophie, Miranda, as well as grand nieces and nephews.  All of these he loved and touched deeply.

He will be greeted by loved ones who have passed, including his son Ryan and his niece Bobbie Jo.

Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 7901 W. Isanogel Rd., from 11:00 am until service time at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 20, 2021.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, February 20, 2021 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 7901 W. Isanogel Rd., with Rev. Dr. Ronald Naylor officiating.  Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery.

Duane loved a good snow, so it’s fitting that he passed in the middle of one of the biggest storms in the Midwest in years. For those who are unable to travel, socially distant services will be livestreamed at www.Facebook.com/meeksmortuary at 1:00 pm Saturday, February 20, 2021.

Duane believed in helping others and he had a passion for reading (especially if the books were from the Muncie Public Library), so in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Second Harvest Food Bank  here : https://www.classy.org/give/299182/#!/donation/checkout  or at curehunger.org OR to the Muncie Public Library https://www.munciepubliclibrary.org/about/donate.
