NEW ALBANY – Evelyn Swain, 81, formerly of Muncie, beloved mother, grandma, cousin, aunt, coworker and friend, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021.

Evelyn was born on July 25, 1939 in Muncie. Mom lived up to the meaning of her name.  Evelyn: beauty and radiance. Her radiance and humor lit up a room. She loved get-togethers with family and friends and was more excited about family reunions than anyone.

She graduated from Selma High School in 1957 and was a dedicated Blue Bird till the end. She was a pioneer for female race drivers, winning dozens of races at tracks in Muncie and Anderson in the 1960’s.

There was never any doubt how much she cared for her family. Her kids didn’t just grow up, they were raised. Manners and appearance were important, but hard work and integrity were paramount.  She had high expectations, but always lead by example.

Retiring in 2006 after 22 years at Child and Family Services in Muncie, she relocated to New Albany to be closer to her grandchildren. At the American Legion post in Cammack she tended bar and cooked, but mostly she loved joking with all the regulars when they stopped in after work. She loved fishing with her dad, Ralph and her brother, George as first mate on his charter boat.

Surviving are two sons, Clifford Swain and Ryan Swain; daughters-in-law, Sandy Swain and Aundrea Hopkins; two grandchildren, Dustin Swain and Kiley Swain; several loving cousins, nieces and nephews; and grand-dog, Fred.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Harris, mother, Bertha Harris; one brother, George Harris and two sisters, Barbara Wolfe and Joan Townsend.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation will take place and she will be buried at a later date next her father at Elm Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to please send donation to Muncie A.R.F., 1209 W. Riggin Road, Muncie, IN 47303.

The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be sent to the family at www.meeksmortuary.com.
