MUNCIE – Frank Bryja, 77, passed away on October 24, 2019, surrounded by family.
He is survived by Sharon, his wife of 55 years, children Beth (Dan) Domsich, Michael (Melanie), Cathy (Toby) Swick and Mary Kay; grandchildren Matthew and Lilly Domsich. He was preceded in death by daughter, Cindy. Frank worked tirelessly to provide for his family, all without a day off or a complaint. We especially remember the Blizzard of ’78 and how he walked from our house to the office to ensure the business and community had groceries. He taught his family to fish, to enjoy good food and wine, how to stock a bread shelf after mass, shared his love of the Indy 500 and how to appreciate good polka music.
Frank graduated from Indiana University in 1965 and received a postgraduate degree at Ball State University in 1967. Frank began his career in the grocery industry with National Tea Company in East Chicago in 1958, joined Marsh Supermarkets in 1965 as the Training Supervisor, and after more than 40 years retired (twice) as President and Chief Operating Officer in 2006.
Frank’s contributions to the grocery industry included operations, merchandising, human resources, research and development, pricing and marketing. It was important to him to be timely, accurate and relevant in all that he did. He treasured the wisdom gained from personal interaction with so many extraordinary associates in the industry and academia.
Frank travelled the world and was well respected by his peers, co-workers and friends. He served on several boards, held officer positions and was a member of the C.I.E.S. World Food Business Summit, Food Marketing Institute, National Grocers Association, Indiana State Egg Board, Marsh EFCU, Howard Marlboro Group, DDBN Retail Advisory Board, Kentucky Colonels, Muncie Elks, Borden Fishing Tournament and Delta Sigma Pi.
In his retirement, he continued to make an impact in the grocery business by bringing in a few carts off the parking lot, facing the labels on a shelf and returning misplaced products. In Frank’s memory please consider taking someone fishing, spend time with a loved one and their caregiver or honk when you drive by the National Corvette Museum.
