MUNCIE- John Douglas McKillip, Jr. 75, passed away early Saturday morning, February 13, 2021 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. He was born August 17, 1945 in Muncie, and was the son of the late John Douglas & Ruth (Watson) McKillip.

John was a loving husband, father, provider and hard worker. He retired from Delco Battery in Muncie after 30 years of dedicated service, he then went to work and retired again after 17 years of service from Allison Transmission in Indianapolis. John was a proud graduate of Muncie Central High School in 1963 and from Ball State University with a degree in Industrial Management. He was an active member of Unitarian Universalist Church of Muncie. John took pride in being a secular humanist. He was very active and caring in giving back and supporting his community. John served the community through Habitat for Humanity, Muncie Attic Window, and the Soup Kitchen of Muncie, and took great pride in doing so. He loved getting together with former classmates and retirees. John loved vintage cars and especially 1953 Buick Skylarks. He loved attending Mecum Auto Auctions and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

John is survived by his son Stephen Michael McKillip; two brothers Richard and Phillip McKillip and a sister Janice James.

John is preceded in death by his parents John Douglas McKillip and Ruth (Watson) McKillip; loving wife Judy Ann (Wood) McKillip; four brothers Alvin (Bud), Fred, Michael B. and Steven D. McKillip; five sisters Virginia Brinson, Margaret (Peggy) Bales, Fern Atkinson, Faye Bryan, and Judy Dunsmore.

Arrangements are being handled by The Meeks Mortuary & Crematory, Washington Street Chapel. John was such a giving and generous person. We worked together at the UU church on a number of events and he invariably shared great ideas and his helping hand. He will be greatly missed. Blessings to his family.

It is difficult to know that John is no longer with us. Her was truly a great guy and a good friend since high school. His intelligence, wit and sense of humor were unmatchable. One of his endearing qualities was his concern for those rendered invisible, excluded and in need, and he turned that concern into action through his work with Habitat and the Muncie Soup Kitchen. He was a good citizen and an exemplary role model for all of us, always treating his fellow man with dignity and respect, regardless of race, religion, gender, or socioeconomic status. Needless to say, he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, my friend.

Stephen, you are in my prayers. Your dad was a brother to me, as much as Mike (my brother-in-law). I will miss him. His support of the soup kitchen and helping us out at Friends Church food pantry will never be forgotten. Peace to thee Stephen and everlasting peace to your dad.

We the friends and 1963 Muncie Central/South classmates will always remember John's willingness to serve and care about others. In recent years, he was a very active member of our reunion committee, helping us get our 55th reunion location, and dedicating many hours to its success. He truly lived his beliefs and made this a much better world. We will miss him and hope our prayers and condolences will confort Steven and his extended family.

Dear Steven and family, I first met John when I volunteered at the Soup Kitchen of Muncie, where I soon discovered that he never sat down. Once he had finished a task, he would look around to see who or what still needed to be done. In addition to helping prepare and serve the food, he helped transport supplies from the Second Harvest Food Bank. He worked tirelessly carrying heavy boxes of food down the stairs to the pantries. He and one of his brothers built a much-needed additional pantry inside the main dining room. Each week, he collected volunteer aprons and took them home to launder. Most of all, he treated the patrons who came through the line with respect. At the Unitarian Universalist Church, where I chaired the annual Bazaar a couple of times, John was a tireless worker. He never left, until the last chair had been stacked and the sanctuary was ready for services the following Sunday. John will be missed. My deepest condolences, Sherry Ware
