MUNCIE – John “Toot” DeWitt went home to Jesus on Thursday, November 11. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family that he loved so much.

John was born in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania on June 26, 1945. He was the son of Clarence and Mary DeWitt. John and his family moved to Muncie when he was young. Growing up he could be found fishing or playing basketball with his friends. He was a proud Muncie Central Bearcat and graduated in 1963. He worked for many years at Indiana Steel and Wire before they closed. He retired from Indianapolis Truck and Bus in 2010.

The real story of his life began when he started dating the love of his life, Orpha “Pooch” Penix. They were married June 30, 1967. They celebrated 54 years of marriage which included 2 sons, John Eric and Matthew, and 6 grandchildren.  They were his pride and joy. Toot loved being a boy dad. He recently reminisced about how much he loved teaching the boys to play basketball, ride go-carts and go fishing and hunting. When the grandkids came along, he continued making magical memories with them, too, especially planting licorice in the garden. He loved spending every moment he could with all of them. He had a contagious smile that everyone loved and was always making everyone laugh.

When he wasn’t with his family, he could be found on the golf course with Pastor Harold Goodpaster or having coffee with his brothers, Jimmy or Dick at the coffee shops around town.

Toot is survived by his loving wife, Orpha “Pooch” DeWitt; his son, John Eric DeWitt and his children, Orion, Luke, and Gracie; son Dr. Matthew DeWitt, wife Melissa and their children Evan, Emily, and Addison.

Toot was one of 9 children. He will be missed by his siblings Sue Rinker, Betty Neudecker (Ozzie), Don DeWitt (Shirley), Jim DeWitt (Becky), Ruth Ann Locke (Harold); two sisters-in-law Marianne DeWitt and Sandra DeWitt. He also leaves countless nieces and nephews and in-laws from both the DeWitt and Penix families, all who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers, Clarence, Robert, and Dick DeWitt.

He will be desperately missed by all who knew him.
