MUNCIE – Julia Ann “Judy” Lewellen, age 100, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at her home in Westminster Village, Muncie.

Judy was born on January 9, 1921 in Muncie, the daughter of Orla P. Harris and Julia M. Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. John O. Lewellen; brother, David P. Harris; sister-in-law, Gerry; and niece Paulette. Also preceding her in death were David’s second wife, Lucy; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Huldah and Tom Stanley; niece, Dorothy Parenteau; great-niece, Cheryl Kaye Manlove; son-in-law, Donald Kuehler; as well as other beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Judy grew up in Muncie and graduated from Muncie Central High School, one of two valedictorians of the class of 1939. She worked at the Wyser Strand theater as a cashier and was a member of the Violet Club.  She attended Ball State Teacher’s College in the fall of 1939. In August of 1941, she married John and worked in the Educational Office at Stanford University in California while John completed his doctorate.

Judy also worked at the Darling Shoppe in downtown Muncie as clerk and accountant; the Collegian Shop in the Village; and helped manage the Campus Cottage Restaurant for several years. She enjoyed working at Jackson Street Hardware as an accountant and as a secretary for various professors at Ball State University. One of Judy’s deep desires was to complete her college degree and she graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in business education from Ball State.

She was a lifetime member of Pi Zeta, which later became Sigma Kappa, and helped with a variety of activities over the years. She also was a lifetime member of the McCray Club; President of the University’s Wives Club in 1974-75; and belonged to the Muncie China Painters Guild. She was a member of the Raintree Porcelain Artist Guild and the Indiana World Organization of China Painters.

Judy was a member of the High Street Methodist Church for 87 years and served her Lord in many capacities there. She also drove for Meals on Wheels into her 90’s “to help older people,” she said.

Judy was a wonderful wife and mother. Her children considered her a renaissance woman for her many gifts, talents, care and love she gave her family, friends, and community. She loved all aspects of homemaking: cooking, gardening, sewing, needle crafting, candy making and entertaining.

Judy is survived by her children, Sandy Kuehler, Nancy (Art) Cota and Richard (Mary) Lewellen. She leaves behind grandchildren, Karen Oakes, Keith Clock, Donnie (Doreen) Kuehler, Miki Carterette, Jon (Katie) Kuehler, Joel Lewellen, Michael (Jennifer) Lewellen, David (Marina) Cota and Joshua Cota; twenty-one great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; nieces, Sherry (Ralph) Jones, Sydney Wulf and Randy Berry; nephew, John David (Peggy) Harris; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-cousins.

In 2010, John and Judy became residents of Westminster Village where Judy served in several volunteer positions to help others. Her family is grateful for the many friendships she developed, as well as for the wonderful Westminster Village staff and caregivers who cared for her in her final years.

She will be greatly missed.
