MUNCIE – Reverend Leon Chechowich passed peacefully into eternity on July 17, 2021, in Muncie, Indiana in Abbey Court at Westminster Village.

Leon was born in 1927 in Buffalo, New York to Joseph and Efemia Davidovich Chechowich. He served in the U. S. Army in 1945 and 1946 and attained the rank of Sergeant.  Upon honorable discharge, Leon completed an undergraduate degree at Toccoa Falls Bible College in Toccoa Falls, Georgia where he prepared for missionary service and met Mary Ann Bash of Zanesville, Ohio. They were married in 1951 and sailed for Australia in 1953 for their first missionary assignment which lasted 10 years. Leon and his wife Mary Ann served as missionaries to Slavic speaking peoples with the Russian-Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Union and Slavic Missionary Service for 70 years. After the initial assignment in Australia, and the fall of the iron curtain, Leon served in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova. During his many years of ministry, Leon pastored churches in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, Australia; Los Angeles, California; Dearborn, Michigan; and Cleveland, Ohio. He retired from active missionary service at age 90.

In 1999, Leon was honored in the bestowing of an honorary doctorate from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary at the Odessa Baptist Theological Seminary in recognition of his significant contributions that prepared Ukrainian pastors for ministry. He was the longest serving active missionary with the Russian-Ukrainian Baptist Union and Slavic Missionary Service.

Leon is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Ann; daughters, Faye Chechowich (Tom Schroeder), Sharon Kostaroff (Tim) and Sandra Johnson (Andrew); son, Stephen Chechowich; grandchildren, Philip, Kimberly, Karen, Alex, and Kevin; great-grandchildren, Ava, Ainsley, Caleb, Lizzy and Jonathan; and one sister-in-law, Sophie. He is remembered and loved by many he served around the world and the U.S.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Conway and John; and sisters, Louise (Mike) and Helen (Lee).

Leon was a long-time member of Evangelical Baptist Church in Buffalo, New York and more recently a member of First Baptist Church in Bradenton, Florida.

Leon loved living in Florida and never let family and friends forget it. After 18 years living in Bradenton, Florida as a home base for his missionary activities, Leon moved with his wife, Mary Ann to Westminster Village in Muncie, Indiana in September of 2020 to be closer to family. The family expresses thanks for the care Leon received by the staff at Westminster Village during the past months.
