MUNCIE- Richard Lee Cash, Jr., died Tuesday evening, November 16, 2021 at Morrison Woods Health Campus.

Richard Lee Cash was born in Marfa, TX on May 19, 1926 to Etta Gatrost Cash and Richard Lee Cash Sr. The family resided in Marfa until Richard had completed kindergarten.  They moved to Vine Grove, KY near Ft. Knox.  He has one sister, Joyce Ann Cash, born September 3, 1934, who survives.

The family journeyed to Anderson, IN, where Richard attended Anderson Schools.  In his senior year, having enough credits to graduate, he enlisted in the U.S Army and served in Okinawa.  He was honorably discharged from the Army on June 6, 1946.

Richard pursued a teaching degree at Anderson College and transferred to Ball State University, Muncie, IN where he received a BS in Business and Biology in 1952.He received an MA in Counseling and Guidance in 1960.

Richard continued his career in teaching while serving in the Air Force Reserve retiring  May 19, 1986 with the rank of Major.

While at Ball State University, Richard, met the love of his life, Phyllis Madder, who became his wife on December 22, 1951.  That union produced two sons.  Russell L. Cash who survives was born on January 29, 1953 and James Edward Cash followed on September 16, 1955.  Jim was tragically killed in an auto accident in Batesville, IN.  Richard lost his beloved Phyllis in January 2016.  It was a sad day for him and the family.  He has struggled with the loss of a wife he loved for 64 years.

Richard fulfilled the position of Guidance Counselor at Richmond Schools, Pendleton Reformatory, New Castle State Hospital, Wabash Schools, and Batesville Schools and completed his career at Plainfield school for Boys.

In addition to his teaching and military careers he was an active member of several RLS congregations, the last being in Brownsburg, IN prior to moving to Lafayette, IN to be near to his son, Russell and wife, Connie Cash.  He currently attends the Mt. Pleasant Community Church, rural Daleville, IN.

He is living at Morrison Woods Health Campus in Muncie, IN, which is just 10 miles from Russell and Connie.  He has enjoyed the arts program at both Morrison Woods and The Springs of Lafayette.  He took up oil painting about 5 years ago and embarked on painting an annual rural church, which has graced his Christmas cards the last three years.  Last year’s painting was of the Mt. Pleasant Community Church he currently attends.  While living at the retirement communities, he has enjoyed playing bingo and euchre.  (We hear he’s hard to beat at euchre.)

Richard is a wonderful father and grandfather.  His grandchildren from Russell’s union with Charlene McDowell Cash, deceased, are Nathan L. Cash and Erin M. Cash.  Russell married Connie Blankenship and Phyllis and Richard warmly welcomed her two sons, Tracy Blankenship and Scot Blankenship.  There are four great-grandchildren from Tracy and Scot.  The word “step” was never heard from Richard or Phyllis.  All are family.

Richard has always held dear the Gatrost and Cash families.  He has recanted several amusing stories about both sides

As earlier mentioned he is living at Morrison Woods in Muncie, IN.  It was a rough go being quarantined to his room during the past two years.  He is happy to be out enjoying the other residents, visits, going to church and out to dinner afterward.  Unfortunately this last round of Covid 19 was too much with all his other health problems.  Richard will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

Funeral Services for Richard will be held Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.  Burial with military honors being conducted by the United States Air Force and the Delaware County Honor Guard will follow in Hawk Cemetery in Yorktown.

Family and friends may call Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at the mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 p.m. There will be a Masonic Lodge of Sorrow Service at 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary.
