MUNCIE – On Tuesday, July 20, 2021, Richard W. Conaway, loving husband, and father of three children and seven grandchildren, passed away at the age of 78 after an extended illness. He was born to John and Louise Conaway on April 11, 1943, in Dover, Ohio. He is survived by his loving wife of 58+ years, Carolyn Sue Morford Conaway and their three children, Lisa (Jon) Carmichael, Michael (Jill) Conaway, Richard M. (Katharine) Conaway. They were further blessed with seven grandchildren, of which Dick was very proud: Jacob and Joshua Carmichael, Kaelyn, Quinn, Kyle, Caroline, and Madeline Conaway. He is also survived by his brother, David (Jerry) Conaway and several nieces and nephews.

Dick was an exceptional athlete at Muncie Central High School (1958-1961) and at Indiana University (1961-1965). He excelled in football, wrestling, and track, receiving the coach’s selection as “Athlete of the Year” in 1961, State Heavyweight Champion in 1961, earning All-State in football, and a full scholarship for wrestling at Indiana University. During his IU wrestling career, he was awarded the L.G. Balfour Award for bringing honor and distinction to Indiana University wrestling in 1965 and earned All-American status.

Dick was also a stellar academic, making the Dean’s list every semester of his collegiate career, ultimately receiving a master’s degree from Purdue University in 1971 in Chemistry on a National Science Foundation Grant. He then went on to touch the lives of many youths by becoming a beloved chemistry teacher at Muncie Central High School. He was also known as “Coach Conaway” to many athletes as a wrestling and football coach at Muncie Central and later coaching football at Delta High School. In addition to coaching high school students, Dick dedicated time to coaching youths in the Metro Football league. Throughout his coaching years, he mentored many athletes, including his two sons, Mike, and Rick Conaway.

Dick led his life by example. As a dedicated Christian, he was always fair and kind to all his students, athletes, and anyone he encountered throughout his full life. He also loved life, was quick to tell a joke and share a laugh. Overall, he loved “his people” and will be missed by all.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. at Glad Tidings Assemblies of God Church, 3001 South Burlington, Dr., Muncie, IN 47302 with Pastor Kevin Holt officiating.
