Muncie – Robert Lewis Hoyt, 96, was born October 10, 1924, in Muncie, IN the oldest child of Marion and Hilda (Rahe) Hoyt. He died Wednesday, September 8, 2021 in his home with his family at his side.

Bob attended St. Lawrence School, and graduated from Stoney Creek High School in 1942 in Randolph County. After graduation he worked for a short time for Motor Express.

He proudly served his country from 1943 to 1946 in the US Navy as a radioman aboard the USS Bermingham DE-530. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Ball State where he met Rita Kerkhove, his wife of 49 years. They were married Nov. 9, 1946 at St. Lawrence Church in Lafayette, IN. Rita died in April 1995. On Feb. 14, 1998, he married Betty Burdorf. She died in May 2005.

Mr. Hoyt retired from Borg-Warner in Muncie after 42 years in estimating, materials handling and plant layout.

He was a lifelong member of St. Lawrence Church and the Knights of Columbus.

A founding member of the Muncie Camera Club, Bob was an award winning amateur photographer since 1946.  In his retirement years he did video editing of family events and other celebrations with friends.

Surviving are Bob and Rita’s children: Emily (John) Kress, R. Stephen Hoyt (Jan Sue), James Hoyt (Rita), Mark Hoyt (Maggi), Samuel Hoyt (Judie Nellis), John Hoyt, Susan Whybrew, Marjorie ( Bill) Morgan, William Hoyt (Debbie), Anne (Steve) Wessel, Russell Hoyt (Lisa) and Gerald Hoyt (Maria).  Also surviving are Betty’s children Kathy Snider, Karl Burdorf (Debbie), and Beth Kirch. He was the proud grandfather of 27 beloved grandchildren, two step-grandsons, 36 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters Barbara Gooden and Mary (Jack) Griffith his brothers R. Thomas Hoyt, Phillip Hoyt (Barbara) Marion Hoyt (Jayne) and Paul Hoyt (Susan), sister-in-law, Mary Hoyt, many nieces and nephews and countless cousins.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Rita, his second wife Betty, his parents, his brothers Raymond and Albert, sister-in-law Edna, brother-in-law Loren Gooden. son-in-law Paul Whybrew, a niece, two nephews and a great granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am. Monday, September 13, at St. Lawrence Church, and will be live streamed at https://stlawrencemuncie.com/live-stream and https://www.facebook.com/stlawrencechurchmuncie/live_videos . Burial will follow with military honors in Gardens of Memory.

Family and friends may call from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 12, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Lawrence Church with envelopes provided at the the mortuary.
