Roger W. Gilcrest passed away peacefully in his home on August 30, 2021 in the presence of his beloved wife, Linda.

He was born November 30, 1937 in Toronto, Ohio the third of 4 children of Laurence B. and Dorothy M. Gilcrest. At an early age, the family moved to the greater Cleveland area where he grew up. He graduated from University School in Shaker Heights, Ohio where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He graduated from Yale University where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. In 1962, he graduated from Case-Western Reserve University Law School and passed the Ohio Bar examination.

He practiced law in Cleveland for 3 years before joining the trust department of a Cleveland bank in 1965. In 1972 he accepted a position with First Bank and Trust Company in South Bend, Indiana and in 1975 was appointed head of the trust department. In 1988 he joined First Merchants Bank in Muncie as Executive Vice President with principal responsibilities for the trust department.

Linda and Roger were married in 1983 and have 4 children, William A. Gilcrest (Lisa), Gretchen P. Bottrill (Mark), Anne M. Guillen (Peter), Scott D. Gilcrest and 12 grandchildren, Jack, Katie and Spencer Gilcrest, Alec and Grace Burud, Russ and Luke Bottrill, Matthew, C.J., and Elizabeth Guillen, Jacob and Jackson Gilcrest. Roger will also be missed by his sister Norma Adams and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Laurel Robinson and brother, Charlie Gilcrest.

Roger was a member of the Board of Directors of First Merchants Bank. He was a member and served on the boards of Muncie Rotary Club, Delaware Country Club, Muncie Public Library, Community Enhancement Projects, and Muncie Industrial Revolving Loan Fund. His interests included golf, reading, international travel and bridge where he accumulated one half Master Point.

The family would like to thank Roger’s doctors, therapists, friends, and especially his nurse, Olivia, for easing his journey with ALS.

A Remembrance Service for Roger will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 4, 2021, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Enhancement Projects, P.O. Box 1892, Muncie, IN 47305 or the charity of your choice.
